How to study right – what science actually says

Most people study the way that feels good – not the way that works. Here's the research in plain language: what's useless, what works, and how to put it into practice starting this week.

First, some housekeeping: three myths

✗ „I'm a visual learner."

✓ Instead: Learning styles have been scientifically debunked – studies find no advantage when teaching is tailored to a supposed type. What matters: the MATERIAL determines the best channel (maps visually, vocabulary spoken aloud) – and everyone benefits equally from retrieval & spacing.

✗ „Highlighting and rereading is learning."

✓ Instead: Both feel productive, but research ranks them among the least effective techniques. On a second read the text feels familiar – and the brain mistakes recognition for mastery (the fluency illusion). Better: close the book and retrieve.

✗ „More hours in one sitting = more success."

✓ Instead: Cramming works for tomorrow – and decays rapidly afterwards. For the same total time, spaced learning clearly beats marathon sessions. It's a question of how you split the time, not how hard you grind.

Active recall – test yourself

Evidence ⭐⭐⭐

Pull knowledge actively out of memory instead of looking at it again: flashcards, practice problems, questions to yourself. Every retrieval strengthens the memory trace – and mistakes show you exactly where it's still shaky.

How to put it into practice this week:

  • After each study session: close the book and write down everything you remember.
  • Turn every topic into 3–5 questions and quiz yourself the next day.
  • Before exams: solve past problems under real conditions – no peeking.

Spaced repetition – review with gaps

Evidence ⭐⭐⭐

Review the same material at growing intervals (e.g. after 1 day, 3 days, 1 week). Each near-forgetting followed by successful retrieval anchors the knowledge more deeply – it's the best-documented effect in learning research.

How to put it into practice this week:

  • Use a flashcard box or app (e.g. Anki) – the intervals manage themselves.
  • Put review dates in your calendar: short & regular beats long & rare.
  • Plan exam material backwards: last pass just before, first pass early enough.

Interleaving – mix up problem types

Evidence ⭐⭐

Instead of practising the same problem type 20 times, mix different types together. This forces the brain to decide anew for each problem WHICH method fits – exactly what's required in the exam.

How to put it into practice this week:

  • When practising, mix problems from different chapters instead of doing them block by block.
  • Regularly sprinkle in older problem types – even ones you've long mastered.

Feynman method – explain until it's simple

Evidence ⭐⭐

Explain a topic in your own words as if your listener were twelve. Wherever you stumble or hide behind jargon, that's the gap. (Named after physicist Richard Feynman – our favourite for good reason.)

How to put it into practice this week:

  • Explain a topic out loud – to a parent, sibling or, if need be, a stuffed animal.
  • Note every spot where you stumble → read up exactly there → explain again.

Elaboration – ask why

Evidence ⭐⭐

Link new knowledge to what you already know: Why is that so? What does it remind me of? What if it weren't? The more connections, the more paths lead back to retrieval later.

How to put it into practice this week:

  • Answer a why-question for every new fact – out loud or in writing.
  • Always dock new material onto an everyday example or a familiar topic.

The setting matters too

Pomodoro: 25 + 5

25 minutes fully focused, 5 minutes of a real break – a longer one after four rounds. It makes big tasks small and is well documented against procrastination.

Sleep saves it

In deep sleep the brain anchors what you've learned for good. Pulling an all-nighter before the exam erases exactly what you're sacrificing it for. Sleep is learning.

Breaks & movement

During breaks the brain replays what you've learned in fast-forward. Just a minute of movement brings focus back – breaks are part of learning, not a luxury.

Distraction out of the room

Your phone costs attention just by sitting in view. Put it in another room – and a fixed, tidy study spot helps your head switch into the mode.

For parents: support without pressure

Even the best method only works in an environment that allows mistakes.

Interest, not control

The question “What did you figure out today?” opens up – “Show me what you got wrong” shuts down. In learning, mistakes are information, not failure: that's exactly where progress happens.

Create structure, not pressure

Fixed study times and a quiet spot work better than any nagging. Making small wins visible carries further than grade pressure – e.g. “You couldn't do that last week.”

With exam anxiety: take it seriously & practise

Anxiety doesn't disappear through reassurance. What helps: realistically simulate the exam situation beforehand (a mock exam with a timer – great active recall on the side), practise calm breathing – and with strong, persistent anxiety, seek professional support.
